真二の告白
柚子と再会来てから3ヶ月後、飲み会で連絡先を交換していた柚子からやっと連絡が入り真二は柚子と食事をすることになった。
柚子は本当に偶然に飲み会に参加しただけで、真二のことを疑ってもいない、と知った真二は柚子の現状を聞き出す。
家族が別々で暮らしていることを聞き、仲のいい家族だったのに家族関係が希薄になったのは火事のせいか？
と考えたが、昔と変わらない様子の柚子に拍子抜けしながらも、柚子が笑えているということは少なくとも今は不幸じゃないってことだろうと結論づける。
それからも真二は強引に理由をつけて柚子に会い、家族と疎遠になった以外に柚子の人生に変化はない。
と結論づけ、あの火事は大したものではなかったのかもしれない、と考えては自分の勝手な解釈だなとその考えを否定した。
そのうち、真二は柚子の笑顔に救われはじめ、柚子の喜ぶことをしてあげたいと思うようになる。
少しでも柚子の今を幸せにしてあげたいと思い柚子と父親を再会させたりもした。
しかし、柚子は真二を騙し御手洗家を探っていたのだと真希子に言われ、真二は柚子が自分を利用するために騙していたのかと愕然とする。
柚子に会って火事についてどこまで知っているか確かめようと必死に柚子を探した真二。
柚子を探し出した先で、皐月の現状を目の当たりにして自分の犯した罪の重さを痛感する。
柚子が火事が起こらずに、皐月が今も元気でいてくれればどんなに良かったか。
と言われ、真二は自分は柚子に合わせる顔が無いのに、柚子を幸せにしてあげたいなどとなんて、おこがましいことを考えていたんだろうと思い知る。
柚子を抱きしめて慰めながら、真二は真実は絶対に隠し通そうと心に決めるのだった。
杏子の怒り
真二の告白を聞いた柚子は、真二が自分に近付いたのは柚子の家のことを探るためだったと気付かなかったとショックを隠すように笑う。
慰めてくれたのは心配してくれたんだ。
と思って嬉しかったんだけどなあと泣きそうになる柚子に、真二は全部が嘘じゃなくて一緒にいると楽しかったと柚子を慰めようとする。
そんな真二を杏子は平手打ちして、もう体裁を整える義理もないんだから中途半端な優しさで柚子を傷つけないでと怒る。
杏子は真希子が放火を認めた時に真二もその場にいたのに、どうして自分がやったって言わなかったのか問いかける。
謝るだけの真二の胸ぐらをつかんで、もう一度なんで黙ってたのか怒鳴りながら聞いた杏子。
真二は今まで何度も自白しなきゃって思ってたけどどうしても言えなかったと答える。
真希子が自白した時も、希一が出頭した時も、早く言わなきゃダメだと思うのと同時に、心のどこかでこれで自分は助かるって思ってしまっていた。
と言いながら土下座で謝る真二を見下ろし、杏子は真二をとある場所に連れていくことにした。
希一の真意
杏子が真二を連れてきたのは、皐月が入院する病院だった。
皐月は自分なんかに会いたくない。
と思うと躊躇う真二に杏子は真二に、頭を下げられたってそれは真二が杏子達から目を逸らしたいだけなんだから嬉しくない。
と言い、申し訳ないと思うなら向き合ってと言い放った。
警察署で希一の事情聴取をしていた刑事の元に、真二が放火を自白したと治から連絡が来たとの知らせが入った。
その知らせを聞いた刑事は、希一に犯人を庇うことは立派な犯罪行為だと怒る。
希一は真二が自白したと知った。
事件の日は高校生の先輩に、中学生ってことを隠せば、働けるバイト先を教えてもらい、さっきの宝石の弁償のためにバイトをしていた。
と告白する。
バイトから帰る時に火事のことを知り、最初は真希子が火をつけた、と思い真希子を問いつめた。
その後真二の靴下がすごく汚れていることに気付いた希一は、最初は真二の靴をなくしたという言葉を信じたが。
日に日にそのことが気になり始めた。
真二がさっきの元を訪れていたことを知っていたため、もしかしたら、火事の時に真二は皐月の家にいたんじゃないか、と思うようになったと供述する。
真希子か真二か、犯人がどちらにしてもやりきれなくて考えないようにしていた。
が被害者家族の気持ちを考えると、このままではいけないんじゃないかと希一は思い、出頭を決意した。
犯人が真二だと分かってなぜ出頭したのか。
と刑事に聞かれ、希一は自分は昔ネットで炎上し酷いバッシングを受けて何度も死のう。
と思ったし自分の名前と顔はこの先もずっとネットに残り続ける。
が、真二はその時の自分よりもっと失うものが多く、この先の重圧に耐えられるほど真二は強くないからと答えた。
皐月の言葉
皐月の病室にやってきた真二はやせ細りやつれた皐月を見て思わず後ずさる。
真二に気付いた皐月は真二が自分の変わり様に驚いたんだと思い、もっと食べなきゃと思ってるけどなかなか食べられないのと笑った。
お見舞いでもらったお菓子を真二に渡そうとしながら、昔真二にクッキーを作ってあげた思い出話をする皐月。
真二は土下座をして、14年前に火事を起こしたのは自分なのに今までずっと黙ってきて皐月のせいにしたことを謝る。
皐月は真二をはじめて家にあげた日、この世に自分の居場所がどこにもないみたいで自分と一緒だと思っていたし、真二が笑ってくれた時は嬉しかったと話す。
皐月は最近火事の日のことを思い出すようになり、真二と目が合ったことを思い出した。
皐月は当時は混乱していて深く考えなかったが時間が経つにつれて真二が現場にいた理由を考えるようになった。
人を疑ったり恨んだりすることは、好きじゃないから真希子と真二のことを忘れよう。
と思って生きてきたが、真希子のSNSを見て真希子と真二の現状を目の当たりにして、抑えていた感情が溢れてしまったと言う。
結局子供たちに迷惑をかけて情けないと自嘲した皐月のは真二を見下ろし、来てくれたことに感謝をしながら、真二を許さないし一生恨むと言い切った。
病室に刑事がやってきて真二は警察署への同行を求められる。
マスコミにも動きが嗅ぎつけられている。
と言った刑事の言葉にマスコミへの恐怖を覚えた真二は、刑事に連れられて病室を去っていこうとする。
皐月は真二を呼び止め、自分にとって人を恨むことは、その人をずっと自分の心の中に住まわせること。
だから、これからずっと真二がどんな気持ちで、どんな人生を送っているか、自分の人生と重ねて生きていくことになると言う。
だからこの先周りに、どんなに非難されたり、面白おかしく書き立てられたりしても、真二のことを真剣に考えている存在がいることを忘れないで。
と皐月に言われ、真二は頷くのだった。
やっと罪の意識が晴れた皐月
皐月は、スッキリした面持ちで杏子と病室でお菓子を食べていた。
甘いものはあまり好きじゃないのに、今日はお菓子が美味しく感じる。
と言う皐月に杏子は昔よくお菓子作ってたのに？と驚く。
お菓子作りはストレス解消のためにやっていた。
という皐月に杏子は、皐月にも色々あったんだねと笑う。
皐月はお菓子を食べる手を止め、火事の日はちゃんとコンロの火を消していたと話し始める。
昔から火には1番、気をつけるようにしていて、出掛ける時は元栓から閉めるようにしていた。
けど、火事はキッチンからの出火だった。
最後にキッチンにいた自分の不注意だったんだ、と思い義父母の形見を全部燃やしてしまって治や義姉に申し訳なくて辛かったと言う。
私じゃなかった、良かった、と泣きながら言う皐月の手を握り、お母さんのせいじゃないってずっと思ってたよと杏子は言う。
皐月はボロボロと泣いて、信じてくれてありがとうと杏子に言うのだった。
