やはり、周平は昭和の頑固親父のまま
年明け早々、嫌なムードに包まれてしまった松尾家。
そのせいか、久しぶりに帰ってきた耕平は、一日早く家を出てしまった。
耕平の専業主夫という選択肢は最後の手段という話なのに、それを頭ごなしに否定した周平を咎める詩子だが、それでも彼は断固として認めない。
周平が昭和の頑固親父から変わりつつあると思っていた詩子だったが、”男は家族を養うために外に出て働くもの”という考えについては全く変わっていなかったことに、ため息を漏らしてしまう。
詩子は耕平に、耕平の思いは周平に伝えるからとメールを送りつつ、彼女なりの考えも一緒に伝える。
この先長い人生、何があるか分からない。
だから、自分を養える最低限の力はそう簡単には手放さないで、と。
管理入院中の悠の元に帰ってきた耕平。
耕平は悠から、悠の母親が、悠の産休明けから院内保育所入所までの四ヶ月ほど、仕事を週一に減らし、出来るだけ育児に参加してくれる、という話を聞く。
耕平はありがたく思うも、悠の母親の年齢的に、仕事をしながらの育児はあまりに負担が大きいのではと、心配する。
悠もそう思い、いっそのこと仕事を辞めて一緒に住もうと提案したが、却下されてしまったらしい。
悠の母親にも彼女なりのコミュニティがあり、それを易々と手放す方が怖いから、と。
だから、話した以上のサポートは期待できないと話す悠に、耕平はそれでもありがたいと返し、その間に自分が立派なイクメンになるから、とにかく今は生むことだけを考えてほしいと、悠を安心させるのだった。
翌日、詩子は絵手紙教室で双子の孫ができることを話す。
そこで彼女は、良かれと思って色々と手を出すと、かえって逆効果になってしまう、ということを学ぶ。
けれど、さすがに何の連絡もしないのもどうかと思い、耕平にメールをするも、あちらは準備万端で、詩子の出る幕はなかった。
孫の誕生
2月8日――
詩子の携帯に、耕平から電話が掛かってきた。
なんと今朝、双子が生まれたのだ。
どうやら昨晩に悠が破水してしまったらしい。
生まれた赤ちゃんは二人とも2500gも満たない低出生体重児で、しばらくは保育器の中で過ごすのだそう。
けれど、子どもは元気に生まれ、悠も無事だと知り、詩子はVサインをしながら、耕平を労う。
その後、詩子は周平に、耕平から送られた孫の写真を見せ、悠の体調が落ち着いた頃にお見舞いに行くと話す。
すると、その詩子の話に周平が乗ってきたのだ。
周平と一緒に行くつもりがなかった詩子だったが、ここで彼の機嫌を損ねるのは良くないと思い直し、翌日、夫婦揃って孫の顔を見に東京へ出るのだった。
悠が入院する病院へ到着した二人。
孫の俊と啓を抱っこさせてもらえた詩子は、悠に労いの言葉を掛ける。
悠は語った。
当時、母親になる気が全くなかった自分が子を授かってしまったことに、戸惑いを感じていたことを。
けれど、生むか堕ろすか、どちらも選べなかった彼女の背中を、耕平が押してくれたのだ。
おかげで今では、双子を生めたこと、その子たちが耕平の子どもだということが嬉しく、耕平には感謝しかないと話す悠。
詩子は悠の言葉から、耕平をどれだけ信頼しているのかが伝わり、安心する。
伝わらない耕平の言葉
そのとき、周平が口を開く。
耕平を専業主夫にしないでくれ、と。
これには詩子も耕平も驚き、固まってしまう。
悠に関しては事態が飲み込めず、目が点になっていた。
周平はそんな周囲のことは構わずに話を続けるが、それを耕平が遮る。
詩子も、そろそろ帰ろうと、周平を引いて急いでその場を退散した。
病院のロビーまで来た詩子と周平。
耕平も、二人を見送る体でついてきていた。
耕平は先程の周平の言葉を咎める。
あの温厚で争いを好まない耕平にしては珍しく、本気で怒っていたのだ。
耕平はこの件については口出しするなと釘を刺し、険悪なムードのまま、その場を去ってしまう。
耕平が去った後、周平は頭を抱える。
耕平のことを想ってわざわざここまで来て、頭を下げてお願いしたというのに、こんな仕打ちを受けるとは思ってもみなかったのだ。
そんな周平の様子に、耕平の言葉が全く分かっていないと思い知らされた詩子は、耕平に代わって、周平にも分かるよう諭す。
このご時世の夫婦は対等関係にあり、周平が持つ、夫が上、妻が下という、上下関係は通じないこと、それにもかかわらず、周平の理想を耕平に押し付けようとしている、ということを。
耕平は耕平なりに一生懸命家族を守ろうと考えているのだから、それに口を挟んで真っ向から否定することは止めるよう言い聞かせる詩子だが、周平は頑なに受け入れず、そのままその場を後にしてしまう。
詩子はまたかと、深いため息を吐く。
と、そこへ、耕平が戻ってきた。
どうやら悠に、晩ご飯を食べていってもらえと怒られたらしく、それで戻ってきたと言う。
周平に嫌気が差していた詩子は、2、3日ほど耕平たちの家事手伝いをすることにし、家には周平一人で帰ってもらうことにする。
そういった内容のメールを詩子から送られた周平は、しばらく帰ってこなくていいと、喧嘩腰に返信してしまうのだった。
翌日――
耕平たちに頼まれて買い出しに出掛けた詩子。
と、周平からメールが届く。
その内容は、熱が出たので大人しく寝ている、というものだった。
素直に帰ってきてほしいと言わない周平に苛立つ詩子は、そのまま黙って寝ていろと思ってしまう。
そんなことを考えていたから、詩子は気づかなかった。
車が迫ってきている、ということを――

最近の周平は丸くなったと思ったら、やはり健在でした、”昭和の頑固親父”節！今の時代、周平の考えはやはり時代遅れと感じてしまいます。
早いとこ軌道修正しないと、このままではいつか周平独りになってしまいそうです。
そして詩子！最後、車に轢かれて終わってしまいましたが、大丈夫なのでしょうか……
もし詩子に何かあったら、ますます周平が独りになってしまうのに……
無事ではなくとも、周平のためにも生きていてほしいと願ってしまいます。
それに、孫が誕生した矢先だというのに……
次回から松尾家にまた新しい変化が生まれてきそうな予感がします。
